Black College Students: Dr Boyce Watkins in LA Times – Paying College Athletes

by on July 26, 2008

Dr Boyce Watkins, a Syracuse University Professor and critic of the NCAA, is set to appear opposite NCAA President Myles Brand on the issue of compensating college athletes.  The article is set to appear in the LA Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and other syndicated Tribune papers this Sunday.

Dr. Watkins has appeared on CNN, ESPN,  CBS Sports and thousands of other media outlets arguing that college athletes should be paid.  He is a faculty affiliate with the College Sports Research Institute at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Watkins has argued extensively that even if the athletes themselves are not compensated, their families deserve a piece of the pie.  The NCAA recently inked a 6 billion dollar contract with CBS Sports simply for the rights to air the NCAA tournament.  Coaches earn millions, while players and their families only get a scholarship.  Dr. Watkins feels this is wrong.
