Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama: Dr Boyce Watkins

by on July 23, 2008

Dr. Boyce Watkins, a professor at Syracuse University and author of the top-selling book “Everything you ever wanted to know about college” recently made an appearance at Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children Conference at Eastern Kentucky University.

Dr. Watkins, who is a regular analyst on CNN, ESPN and BET, spoke to the youth about the importance of education and the fact that an “at risk child” is not as risky as we might think.

“In finance, we are taught that risk has both an upside and a downside,” says Watkins, who spoke to over half a million youth this year alone. “I want counselors to see that Bill Gates and Barack Obama were also at risk youth, along with Oprah Winfrey and other great Americans.”

Educationally, Dr. Watkins earned BA and BS degrees with a triple major in Finance, Economics and Business Management. In college, he was selected by the Wall Street Journal as the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Finance. He then earned a Masters Degree in Mathematical Statistics from The University of Kentucky and a PhD in Finance from The Ohio State University and was the only African-American in the world to earn a PHD in Finance during the year 2002.  He is currently a Finance Professor at Syracuse University.
